New to TEDx? Here Are 5 Game-Changing Tips for Speakers and Attendees

Welcome to the second edition of xPress! Whether you’re stepping onto the TEDx stage for the first time or attending the event as a newbie, this newsletter is for you.

TEDx is more than an event. It’s a shared experience where ideas spark, perspectives shift and connections flourish. But if it’s your first time, the excitement can come with a few questions, whether you're a speaker or an attendee.

As we prepare for the inspiring TEDxPanaji, many of you will be experiencing TEDx for the first time and may have several questions. So, here are 5 things you must know to make the most of this transformative experience.

As we gear up for TEDxPanaji, here are 5 things every TEDx first-timer should know:

Tips For First-Time Participants

1. Your Idea is the Hero, Be Original

TEDx thrives on originality. Share an idea that matters to you: something that ignites curiosity or solves a problem. Ask yourself: "If the audience remembers one thing, what should it be?" Build your talk around that.

2. The Genius of 18 Mins, Create An Impact

The famous 18-minute limit is a gift! It forces clarity and keeps the audience engaged. Make the most of every minute. Pro Tip: Rehearse relentlessly with a timer.

3. Be Thought-Provoking, Not Divisive

TEDx thrives on ideas that illuminate, not inflame. You can challenge conventional wisdom through curiosity and nuance, while avoiding any partisan ideologies or beliefs.

4. Respect Copyright, Be Responsible

Every element of your talk, from slides to video clips, must comply with copyright law. Prioritise using original content. If you must use third-party materials (images, music, footage, etc.) secure permissions.

5. Collaborate with the TEDx Team, Seek Help

From tech checks to slide decks, lean on the TEDx team. Remember the organisers are there to assist you throughout the way. Let them help you avoid common pitfalls.

Tips For First-Time Attendees

1. Come with an Open Mind, and a Notebook!

At TEDx, you’ll hear ideas that challenge, inspire or even confuse you. Jot down thoughts, it’ll deepen your reflection later.

2. Enjoy the Breaks, Make Connections

Some of the best connections are made over coffee. Don’t rush out during breaks or after the event is over. Instead, mingle with speakers and fellow attendees.

3. Secure Your Seat, Register Yourself

Since TEDx seats are limited, all audience members must register in advance. Official sign-up links are announced through our newsletter and social channels. Stay tuned for regular updates.

4. You’re Part of the Energy, Be Present

Your presence, laughter, applause, attention fuel the event. To truly be present and respect the participants, keep your phones in silent mode. You’re not just a spectator; you’re co-creating the TEDx experience.

5. Engage Beyond the Event, Be Active

TEDx isn't just about one day, it's a year-long event. Participate in the ongoing workshops, networking sessions and community projects. Keep the conversations going!

Important TEDx Rules:

  • TEDx events neither pay nor charge speakers

  • Sponsors or organisers can't be speakers
